This translation report is based on the translation of The Art of Advocacy : Briefs,Motions,and Writing strategies of America's Best Lawyers(Chapter1-2),which presents lots of examples of masterful advocacy to show how lawyers write wining motions and briefs.These briefs describe many important,timely and controversial cases,with detailed annotations below every case.The part for which the translator is responsible mainly mentioned various examples of how to tell the court about the facts that lead to your client's dispute.The source text belongs to storytelling format on the subject of law and usually serves for law students,lawyers and others with professional background or people who want to enlarge their knowledge of foreign laws.In the process of translating legal texts,the translator should pay attention to the differences between the law system in China and that in other countries,which may cause a difficulty in readers' comprehension.What's more,it is also necessary for the translator to reflect the characteristics of legal language of the source text as well as stick to the principle of faithfulness.In the first part of the report,the translator gives an outline of the related information about the background of the source text,the author and reasons why the translator chooses the book rather than others.Then the translator makes a brief introduction to the translation tasks,including preparation before translation,the schedule of the translation and post-translation quality control etc.In the third part,the translator introduces the four principles of legal translation proposed by Li Kexing and Zhang Xinhong,which are used as a guidance in the translation task and then illustrates how these principles are applied at lexical,syntactic and discourse level respectively.The fourth part,as the main part,deals with the analysis of variousexamples.In this part,the translator shows how these translation principles are adopted in the English-Chinese translation process.The last part is the conclusion of this report,including major finding,implications,limitations and suggestions.Through this project,the translator hopes to know more legal cases,learn more about legal text features and relevant translation strategies and seek the solutions to problems during translation process.Besides,the translator also wants to give general readers the legal writing styles and features of briefs and motions written by brilliant American lawyers.
