This is a report on the translation of excerpts from The Art of Advocacy: Briefs,Motions and Writing Strategies of America' s Best Lawyers,written by Noah A.Messing.The book mainly focuses on strategies for legal writing,in particular for briefs and motions.It collects over 150 examples written by some of American's best lawyers.Through analyzing these examples with detailed annotations,Noah presents a host of strategies for writing effective briefs or motions.Many scholars have spoken highly of the book,maintaining that it is the perfect guidebook on legal writing.In terms of the text type,The Art of Advocacy: Briefs,Motions and Writing Strategies of America' s Best Lawyers is a scholarly legal text,which possess significant features.On the one hand,the language is professional,as there are a great number of legal words and legal terms in the book.On the other hand,as a scholarly text,the style of such text is very formal.All these features bring some challenges to the translation of scholarly legal texts.This report elaborately introduces the background of this translation practice,including the introduction to the book,its author and the significance of translating the book.The whole translation process is also described in detail.By analyzing the text type and the features of the book,and with Skopos theory as the theoretical basis,this report mainly explores several techniques adopted during the translation process through examples at the lexical,syntactic and textual level.In addition,the translator makes a summary of the major findings,implications and limitations of this translation task.And she also offers some suggestions to future translation task.
