A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Legal English Intensive Reading Course(An Excerpt)

China is running on its course toward globalization and deepening its communication and cooperation with the rest of the world.Therefore,it urgently needs more competent translators and interpreters,especially those in laws,where qualified talents are insufficient.Furthermore,compared with those in economy,politics and other fields,the studies and researches in law are far more than enough.This is mainly reflected on the relatively small amount of research,the lagging theoretical research of legal translation compared to the development of its practice,and the lack of clear methodological guidance.In practice,there are misspelling and grammatical mistakes,inappropriate translation of terminology,and failure of understanding of the source text.In order to solve these problems mentioned above,this practice report is written to summarize the translation skills and some experience in legal translation by combining translation theory with the practice.The author chose the first four chapters of the Contract Law of Legal English Intensive Reading Course(LEIRC),a designated textbook of LEC written by Professor Zhang Falian from China University of Political Science and Law.Before translation,the author analyzed the source text from the perspectives of intratextual factors and extratextual ones in accordance with Nord’s text analysis theory.The author found out that intratextual and extratextual factors supplement each other,influencing the choice of translation strategies and skills.Through analysis and researches,the author concludes that the main reader of this textbook(LEIRC)are students and examinees,so the communicative function of LEIRC shall be fully performed.Therefore,the author translated the material with the guidance of theories of "Communicative Translation" by Peter Newmark and of "Instrumental Translation" by Christiane Nord.The material of LEIRC belongs to academic legal language.The author translated the material in accordance with the basic principles of legal translation--accuracy and rigourousness,clarity and conciseness,consistency,and standardization.Through the translation practice,the author summarized the skills and methods of translating words and sentences and the relevant strategies in legal translation.The findings of this report are expected to help other translators in the legal field.
