The translation of Culture Shock! Austria: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette is to provide the target audience who wants to travel to Austria or who wants to work there with the information and knowledge to help them avoid the culture shock.The target audience reads this book for acquiring knowledge and information,especially knowledge about Austria's geography,history and culture.Therefore,the audience-oriented translation strategy is adopted to fulfill the readers' purpose.Based on Newmark's communicative translation theory,there are three types of information in Culture Shock! Austria: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette needed to be translated: geographical terms,historical events and cultural terms.Geographical terms will help readers find the geographic location,understand the characteristics of Austria and its nine federal states as well as feel the beauty of Austria.Therefore,names of cities,federal states that impair the understanding of readers should be translated with supplement of location description,feature introduction,and map information to achieve the purpose of providing geography knowledge.Four-character structures are used for the translation of tourist attractions to help readers feel the beauty of Austria.History knowledge lays a foundation for readers to understand the customs and habits of Austria.Thus,explanatory translations and footnotes should be adopted to translate the sentences that implied by specific historical backgrounds so as to supplement target readers with corresponding historical knowledge,such as historical background,historical events,etc.Cultural terms is the key to help target readers to avoid cultural shock.If the target readers lack understanding of Austrian culture,they will not have a great trip or life in Austria.To provide readers with culture knowledge,the translations have been dealt with by addition and replacement.The focus of the translation is the reaction of target readers.As an important factor in determining the translator's translation purpose,the target audience plays a key role in translation projects.In the process of translation,the reader's knowledgebackground and acceptance should be fully considered.Only in this way,can the translation be truly understood and accepted by the target audience.The purpose of providing them with knowledge will be achieved.
