| English Education under the background of the new curriculum reform is a targeted cultural change progress.The culture conflicts are inevitable due to the differences between the advocated classroom culture and the original one.Only when facing these cultural conflicts,will we truly achieve the construction of the English classroom culture.English classroom culture in this thesis is a complex whole of the value system,thinking modes,classroom lifestyles and behavioral norms,being established through the classroom interaction between teachers and students.At the same time,classroom itself is a type of culture.However,people have always had certain biases towards the understanding of the English classroom culture,either interpreting it as a simple linguist ic culture or considering it as the context of the classroom teaching,very little research is done by taking English classroom itself as a cultural phenomenon.Adopting the qualitative research method,together with the classroom observations,case studies and interviews,the thesis explores the realities of the English classroom culture of Grade 7 and Grade 8 in Chengyang No.5 Middle school so as to examine the existing problems and trace the origins.It further proposes suggestions for English teachers to construct an English classroom culture.The study finds that since the new English curriculum reform,teachers’ teaching has undergone significant changes,along with a clear shift in their teaching focus.Their focus has shifted from the tran smission of subject knowledge and skills to the cultivation of students’ positive emotional attitudes and values,their thinking quality,cultural character and learning capacities.Nevertheless,problems still exist,such as teachers’ inadequate understanding towards the English classroom culture,the anomie of the English classroom culture,being expressed in the features of arbitrariness,deviation and monotony,and the formalism and the labeling culture of the English Classroom.The root causes of these phenomena involve the negative factors of Chinese traditional culture,the realistic constraints and the teachers’ own factors.Combined with the new momentum of the English classroom culture construction——Core Competencies of English Subject,based on the analysis of the status quo and root causes of the above English classroom culture,the thesis further puts forward the following suggestions for English teachers,first of all,they should constantly update their educational ideas and use theory to guide practice;secondly,it is highly recommended that the teachers build an English classroom culture community with students to highlight inter-subjectivity through equal exchanges and mutual respect;thirdly,they are required to improve their cultural awareness and create diversified teaching goals in their teaching process;finally,it is necessary for teachers to improve their cultural consciousness by taking every student into consideration,being aware of students’ needs and being flexible in their teaching practice. |
