In April,2022,the Ministry of Education formulated and promulgated the new English curriculum standards for junior middle schools,which clearly put forward the leading role of English subject core competency in English curriculum.As one of the main types of English,reading teaching is an important way to cultivate students’ core competency of English.As an important teaching method in junior English reading class,the effectiveness of classroom questioning has a direct impact on the quality of junior English reading teaching.Therefore,questioning in junior reading class plays a key role in the cultivation of students’ core competency of English.This thesis reviews the current research on the core competency of English of questioning in English reading,and defines the meaning of core competency of English subject and questioning in English reading in junior middle school.This study is based on the comprehensible input and output hypothesis,interaction theory,and scaffolding teaching theory.On this basis,this study investigates English reading classes by four different English teachers with 262 students in a middle school in Chengdu,Sichuan Province,with questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interview.It is found that the current problems in developing the core competency of English subject in English reading class in junior middle school are as follows:(1)Uneven distribution of questions,mainly focus on the cultivation of students’ language ability;(2)The lack of the cultivation of cultural awareness;(3)Simple questions,unable to cultivate students the ability of critical thinking and creativity;(4)Questions failing to arouse the students’ enthusiasm.In view of the problems found,this paper puts forward the following strategies to improve the classroom questioning:(1)Asking questions skillfully to develop students’ language ability based on real life;(2)Asking questions of excellent culture skillfully to cultivate students’ cultural awareness;(3)Grasping the difficulty level and setting questions to improve the students’ thinking quality;(4)Expanding learning methods and set questions skillfully to improve students’ learning ability.From this,it can be seen that exploring questioning around the four dimensions of core literacy:language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality,and learning ability can ensure the effectiveness of classroom questioning,thus achieving the ultimate goal of cultivating students’ core literacy of English.The results of the study provide a new perspective for the research of junior middle school English reading classroom questioning,and also provide some reference for the majority of junior high school English teachers to cultivate students’ English core competency in reading classroom questioning.
