| As translation studies develop,descriptive translation studies have received more attention.Translational norms rely on descriptive studies.Toury is considered to be the first scholar who proposed translational norms.Operational norms,a kind of translational norms classified by Toury,have been studied and developed by other scholars.This thesis synthesizes the definition and classification of translational norms proposed by Toury and Chinese scholars.It describes diachronic changes of operational norms of translating English attributive clauses into Chinese.According to previous studies,most popular operational norms are transformation of syntactic structures,preposition or postposition,and explication of logical relationship.Thus,this thesis discusses the following questions: 1)What are diachronic changes of Chinese syntactic structures translated from English attributive clauses over the past30 years(1988-2018)? 2)What are diachronic changes of attributive capacity of Chinese attributive structures translated from English attributive clauses over the past30 years(1988-2018)? 3)What are diachronic changes of addition of conjunctions in subordinate complex clauses translated from English attributive clauses over the past30 years(1988-2018)?This thesis is based on a descriptive study of six Chinese versions of the first ten chapters of Uncle Tom’s Cabin,which includes 412 English attributive clauses.Attributive clauses are divided into 220 restrictive attributive clauses and 192non-restrictive attributive clauses.From the description,the operational norms of translating attributive clauses into Chinese can be concluded as below: 1)Over the past thirty years,among all the Chinese syntactic structures translated from attributive clauses,phrases and “S-V” structures account for the largest percentage.The percentage of phrase is the largest in syntactic structures translated from restrictiveattributive clauses.The “S-V” structure ranks the first place in the structures translated from non-restrictive attributive clauses.2)Average attributive capacity has declined generally since 1998.The attributive capacity of attributive structures translated from non-restrictive attributive clauses has declined since 2006.Restrictive attributive clauses are translated into more attributive structures with smaller attributive capacity,compared with non-restrictive attributive clauses.3)Among all of subordinate complex sentences,causative conjunctions are most frequently added.Conditional relations are on the contrary.Of all the added conjunctions,adversative conjunctions account for the largest proportion in the translation of restrictive attributive clauses.In the translation of non-restrictive attributive clauses,causative conjunctions are added more than other types of conjunctions. |
