Biology, the science of studying the structures, functions, occurrence and development laws of organisms, includes such disciplines as cytology, genetics, physiology and ecology, thus bearing characteristics of interdisciplinary disciplines. The major objectives of the science lie in clarifying and controlling life activities, remoulding nature, and providing practical services in the fields of industry, agriculture and medicine. With the rapid development of modern technology and the international intensifying exchanges in biotechnology, the translation of biological sci-technology texts is becoming increasingly important.Gideon Toury put forward the Theory of Translational Norms in the 1960s-70s,the theoretical core of which includes Preliminary Norms,Initial Norms and Operational Norms. The theory is intended to comprehensively handle and evaluate the source texts and the target texts on both macro and micro levels,so as to adopt appropriate translation strategies for conveying the information of the source texts. Therefore, the theory is of guiding significance to the translation practice of biological sci-technology texts, with its primary goal being focused on the transmission of information itself.Based on Toury's Theory of Translational Norms and the biological English work What Can Nanotechnology Learn From Biotechnology?,the present translation practice report selects approximately 17,000 words from the second part of the book, written by such authors as Alan McHughen,Jeffrey Burkhardt and Margaret Mellon,as its research object. This report is mainly comprised of the following three aspects:firstly,it introduces the requirements, significance and translation process of the translation task;secondly,it expounds the origin, overseas and domestic research status quos and elements of the Theory of Translational Norms;finally, based on the Theory of Translational Norms,it analyzes,by way of exemplification, the source texts and the target texts from the aspects of vocabulary, syntax and text, explores and discusses the problems found in the process of translation practice, and puts forward corresponding solutions to the problems as wellIt is exemplified in the study that Toury's Theory of Translational Norms can provide effective guidance for the translation of biological texts. It is also pointed in the thesis that,in the specific translation process,a translator's operations based on the Theory of Translational Norms and the corresponding strategies and methods such as Preliminary Norms,Initial Norms and Operational Norms taken in the target texts, will be tremendously beneficial to improving the quality of the target texts.
