The thesis is an E-C translation report on an excerpt from the book Cancer: Its Causes and Treatment. As SL shining through is a phenomenon leading to translationese, the translator examines its mechanism and adopts proper translation strategies under the guidance of Gideon Toury's Norm Theory to minimize its impact upon the TT.On account of the SL interferes with the TL in the process of translation, the translation language becomes a language variant, neither like the SL nor the TL.The German scholar Elke Teich named such interference “the SL shining through”.Though it is unavoidable, too much of it will result in remarkable translationese in the TT.Toury holds that the translation process generally observes preliminary norms, initial norms, and operational norms, which describe the presentation and linguistic matter of the TT.The research of the translator finds that the SL shining through can be effectively avoided if operational norms are observed in translation. The SL shining through is mainly manifested on the lexical, grammatical and other levels of the TL,which leads to five main problems: the explication of connectives in the TT,the indistinct expression of the TL,the non-standard expression of the TL,the redundancy of the TL and atypical use of punctuation in the TL.The translator adopts specific translation strategies in line with the operational norms to solve these problems, such as omission, addition, annotation, adaptation and conversion, thus effectively minimizing the impact of the SL shining through and translationese in the TL.
