Study On Donation Movement In Xiangxi During The Anti-Japanese War(1937-1945)

During the period of full-scale war of resistance against Japan,the strategic location of Xiangxi area became increasingly important as a gateway to the rear area of the great southwest,with the formal formation of the large rear area centered in Sichuan.The Xiangxi region is backward economically at that time and refugee problems have become prominent at wartime.In order to support the great cause of the War of Resistance against Japan.To raise funds and materials for the war of resistance against Japan,people launched a vigorous financial donation movement,under the active organization and promotion of local governments and all walks of life in Xiangxi.The donation movement has also become an important part of the anti-Japanese war in Xiangxi.Take the eve of the Changsha War in September 1939 as the boundary,the donation movement in the Xiangxi region went through two stages during the war.The first stage is mainly based on people’s voluntary contributions.There are fewer donations and the scale is not large.By the second stage,as the National Government continued to improve the relevant laws and measures related to the donation movement,the Xiangxi donation movement was more organized,the number of donations increased significantly,and the scale also expanded.The forms of donation in Xiangxi generally include cash donations,material donations and aircraft donations.Organizations that organize and lead the donation movement include institutions with official backgrounds such as the National Salvation Council for Saving the State,and Liling Students’ Resistance Committee and the Anti-Adversity Support Association and other civil organizations of Hunan.In order to promote the donation movement,the government and non-government organizations have also strengthened the management of it,including regulating the collection,exchange,dominance,and use of the donations.From the perspective of the development of the entire donation movement,Xiangxi’s donation has the characteristics: participate in a wide range of people,people who offer donations are mostly Miao people,and the donations are mainly to the army.The development of the Xiangxi donation movement in wartime provided a certain amount of financial and material support for the great cause of the anti-Japanese war.It encouraged the morale of the officers in front of the war and strengthened the national consciousness of Xiangxi ethnic minorities.However,there are also obvious problems in the donation movement,including the existence of apportionment,the existence of a certain anti-donation behavior of the people,and imperfect donation procedures.These problems have limited the effectiveness of the donation movement.
