Abstract/Summary:
Known as “one of the four condemnation novels”,Lao Can You Ji is written by Liu E in the late Qing dynasty.With vivid language and innovative sentences,it is of great value in literature and sociology and has always been studied by scholars from all walks of life.This book has been widely translated into many languages.Among those English translations,Tramp Doctor’s Travelogue,jointly translated by Lin Yichin and Ko Te-shun,is one that has never been studied by any scholar,which is a great pity in the translation studies of Lao Can You Ji.The thesis focuses on two translators(Lin Yi-chin and Ko Te-shun)and their translated version of Lao Can You Ji.Through exploring and integrating their life information by historical research method,this thesis enriches knowledge of the translators’ life experiences,and seeks reasons why they select this book as well.By means of intensive reading,the paratext of the translation is presented.At the same time,the translation is analyzed to summarize the translation strategies.For the first time,this thesis studies Lin Yi-chin and Ko Te-shun’s translation of Lao Can You Ji 南的春天》·林疑今··四社出版部·1934··《风波》·鲁迅·林疑今译·《民众论坛》第11卷第3期·1935The study is com prised of five parts.The first part introduces research background and objects,research significance and methods.The second part preliminarily enriches their life experiences by collecting and integrating the two translators’ life information,and summarizes their translation ideas and the reasons for their translation of Lao Can You Ji.The third part presents and analyzesthe paratext,generalizing the realistic value of this novel and translation purpose,which facilitates the text analysis in next part.The fourth part discusses the translation strategies of Tramp Doctor’s Travelogue,mainly from scenery description,character portrayal,music scenes description those three aspects,by exploring the translating of vocabulary,rhetoric and sentence pattern,and ultimately summarizes the following translation strategies: in terms of scenery description,translators adopt domestication as well as foreignization.With the strategy of foreignization,translators show the original objects in the scenery and the rhetorical devices vividly;While they depict the general appearance or the poetic imagery beauty of the picture with the strategy of domestication,usually by adjusting the sentence pattern or by adding or deleting words.In terms of character portrayal,in order to reproduce the archetypal character and character’s personality,translators mainly employ the strategy of foreignization.In terms of music scenes description,they primarily use the strategy of domestication to enhance the translation of rhetorical devices and pay attention to the transmission of music effects.The fifth part integrates the new findings of the translators’ life information,summarizes translation strategies,and points out the significance of this research and the direction of further research.
