Then,the function of language is offering a chance for people understanding these different cultures.To touch upon the final goal,translation,especially literary translation,utilized as one of the most representative measures.This thesis will start the discussion from the perspective.The present thesis attempts to discuss the translation of the plenty and rich cultural information embedded in the work by utilizing the Chinese version of Angels & Demons,by Dan Brown.Ground on the discussions,it studies how the translator should make the target audiences to comprehend the contents of source text,while keeping the characteristics of source text's culture intact in the translating process.After all,because of the unbalanced developments of different regions,some cultures are popular and easy to accept.Compared with these,some cultures are unknown for the world.Therefore,the present thesis,through the literature reviews of the author,the translator,and related theories,utilizes the theories of thick translation and paratext,by the specific measures of paratext realizing the conception of thick translation,to analyze how the translator will guide Chinese audiences to understand western civilization,keep these cultural characteristics,and avoid distorting the original intentions for meeting the reading customs of Chinese audiences.Besides,based on these analyses,the thesis also provides seven principles of making annotations: What kind of works should be annotated? In the work,what contents need to be annotated?the factor of accuracy of annotations,How a translator control the translated version?the factor of component elements,the issue of communication between the author and the translator,and the issue of cited the author's other works as references in the translating process.
