A Study On The English Translation Of Zhongyong From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

The book Zhongyong is the succession and development of Confucianism and is the beginning of the philosophy of Confucianism.As the traditional Chinese classics,it has produced far-reaching influence on China and even the whole world for over two thousand years.In recent years,with the promotion of traditional Chinese culture,translation studies of Zhongyong have begun to attract the attention of many scholars.Ku Hongming is the first Chinese to translate the Confucian classics such as Zhongyong into English.His translation has broken the monopoly position of missionaries and sinologists on the translation of Chinese classics.His translation of Zhongyong is the most popular and is well received by western readers.At present,many scholars study Ku Hongming's translation from the perspectives of translation norms,functional equivalence,domestication and foreignization strategies,etc.As a new translation theory,eco-translatology is put forward by Professor Hu Gengshen under the tide of global ecological thinking.Combined the ecology with translatology,this theory introduces these concepts such as "Translational Adaptation and Selection","Translational Eco-Environment","Translator's Centerness","Three-Dimensional Transformations","Integrated Degree of Adaptation and Selection" into translation study.In recent years,the theory has gradually developed in intensive content,expanded researchers and mature study methods since its emergence.The eco-translatology provides the new perspective for the translation studies on Chinese classics works represented by the book Zhongyong.Based on the theory of eco-translatology,the author of this thesis analyzes and studies the translation process of Zhongyong translated by Ku Hongming through a large number of examples,using the "three-dimensional transformations" method of eco-translatology.The study of Ku Hongming's translated version the author makes is carried out from the following three aspects.First,the previous studies on English translated versions of Zhongyong have been introduced.Then,the key concepts of eco-translatology have been presented.Finally,the specific analysis of Ku's translated version has been done in the linguistic,cultural and communicative dimensions.Through the study and analysis,the thesis has arrived at the following findings.First,Ku's translation of Zhongyong is the process of the translator's constant adaption to the translational ecological environment and the constant selection of the translation strategies and methods.Therefore,the eco-translatology possesses the guiding significance for the Chinese classics translation.Second,Ku's adaptive selection on the linguistic dimension including the levels of syntax and texts,and his adaptive selection on the cultural dimension affect and promote each other,which helps to achieve the ultimate goal of communication.That is to say,in the process of specific translation,it is difficult to separate the language dimension,cultural dimension and communication dimension because they are intertwined,interconnected and interacted.Third,the translation of Zhongyong by Ku Hongming is the product of the translator's adaptation to the translational ecological environment.It can be seen that the translational ecological environment is crucial to the generation of the translated text.Four,Ku Hongming's translation lays more emphasis more on the overall grasp and understanding of the translated version,and more considers conveying the cultural connotations of the original text from macro level.This study shows that the study on Chinese classics translation based on the eco-translatology theory is conducive not only to better reflecting the cultural value and cultural connotation of classic works in the translation,but also to the spread of Chinese classics and intercultural communication.
