Studies On The English Translation And Communication Of Zhongyong

Extracted from Book of Rites by Zhu Xi from Southern Song Dynasty,Zhongyong is one of the most important traditional Chinese classic works of Confucianism.Together with the Analects of Confucius,the Great Learning,the Mencius,they consist of the "Four Books" which are traditional Chinese classic works of Confucianism.Zhongyong was an essential part of imperial examinations for a time in ancient china and had a huge impact on the lives and minds of the ancient Chinese.With only less than 3600 characters,Zhongyong is much shorter compared with other classic works of Confucianism,but it contains rich Philosophical Implication of ancient China.Chinese-American Sinologist Wing-tsit Chan once remarked:Zhongyong is likely to contain the richest Philosophical Implication among traditional Chinese classic works of Confucianism.Since the advent of the English version of Zhongyong in 19th century,there are copious English-translated versions up to now,the translators are mainly foreign missionaries and scholars.Enhancing the study on English translation and communication of Zhongyong is conducive to promote Chinese culture worldwide.In the first chapter,this paper elaborates on the selection of the topic,the relevant literature review of English version of Zhongyong,the research methods and the theoretical basis.In the second chapter,the author describes the history of English versions of Zhongyong.In the third chapter,the author conducts comparison study of Zhongyongfrom the perspective of its core concepts.In the fourth chapter,the author expounds the translation strategy of Zhongyong in detail under the guidance of Foreignization and Three Beauties Principle.In the last chapter,the author summarizes the English translation and communication of Zhongyong and offers some exploratory suggestions on the English translation of traditional Chinese classic and their international communication.The author hopes this paper will bring enlightenment to the possible new translation of Zhongyong and its communication.
