The Skill Study On Lu Wei's Adaption About Film Scripts

Throughout the century-old history of Chinese films,good novels have been giving nutritions to the domestic films all along as well as propelling them to develop and flourish.Adapting novels to scripts is not just converting one literary genre to the other,but essentially endowing whole new meanings to the original novels,which requires the special adaptation skills.Nowadays,a large number of films adapted from novels are of varying quality.Adapting a novel to a high-quality film has become a challenge faced by all practitioners.So,research on the adaptation skills has both realistic and far-reaching significance in the present.Wei Lu is a highly successful domestic screenwriter,whose works not only became top-grossing films but also repeatedly won both domestic and international film festival awards.In the process of the novel-to-script adaptation for many years,Wei Lu had a unique eye on selecting the materials and created works that have a strong style of his own.By taking Wei Lu's representative screenplays-Farewell My Concubine,To Live,and White Deer Plain-as examples,this essay uses the document comparison method by comparing the novels and the adapted scripts to analyze his selection of materials,adjustments on the content structure,identification of the themes,remodeling of the characters,recreation of the plots,and the employment of the props throughout the film.From the above analysis and also taking Lu Wei's creative background and life experience into account,the essay explores and then concludes Wei Lu's novel-to-script adaptation skills.This article is divided into four parts: the introduction part which clarifies the purpose and significance of the research,briefly outlines the history and status quo of domestic novel-to-film adaptation,and the current research on adapted screenplays in general as well as Wei Lu's works.Based on the principle of �getting to know one's background before discussing one's works �,the second part,through "in-depthinterviews" with Wei Lu,discovers Wei Lu's thinking process during the adaptation,understands his selection on materials and the unique style of his screenplays,that is,choosing themes of the epics.His works are very dramatic,claiming a unique style of its own.The third part studies the remodeling of characters in the novel-to-script adaptation as well as the adaptation skills involved.The fourth part analyzes the uniqueness of the props which are used to connect story clues,strengthen the theme,and improve the aesthetic of the works.
