Translation of English historical material enjoys a relatively high research value, which makes it play an increasingly vital role in the current historical research. It is a great honor for the author to participate in the E-C translation project of the book entitled Indelible Ink—the Trials of John Peter Zenger and the Birth of America's Free Press,a famous English book about the history of the birth of America's free press. The author cites the first chapter as a case analysis, which primarily introduces the historical background about the trials of John Peter Zenger. At present,as a matter of fact, there is few translated works related to the birth of America's free press and few efforts are taken to have a detailed study of the translation of English historical material at home. Therefore,on the basis of translation practice of the first chapter of this book, this report, under the guidance of the Skopos theory, bears the main aim of exploring the translation of English historical material and providing a detailed analysis of major issues and difficulties at lexical, syntactic and textual level, including the translation of proper nouns, long sentences,as well as the cohesion and coherence of discourse. For all difficulties, the author further puts forward the corresponding solutions including how to translate proper nouns and long sentences as well as how to realize textual cohesion and coherence. In addition, this report also points out some limitations of this translation and a few suggestions for future translation of English historical material.
