As a successor to the aesthetic spirit of the Taiwan's New Cinema,and as arepresentative director of Taiwan's "post-new film" period,Chang Tso-Chi has taken animportant position in the contemporary film industry in Taiwan with its distinctivepersonal style of creation.Since 1996,as an independent film director,Chang Tso-Chi directed and wrote the scripts for his eight feature films and two short films with hisconsistently adherence to the attitude of Taiwan-based independent filmmaking,he haswon Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards for many times and has affirmed by many importantawards at international film festivals,all of these laid him a unique position in thecontemporary film industry in Taiwan and even in Chinese film industry.In the currentChinese film industry,film artists who consistently adhere to the creation spirit of"Auteur film" and the type of creation of independent filmmaking are extremelyrare,therefore,it is necessary to show concern on the creation course of Chang Tso-Chi who is a distinctive movie author,and to discuss his distinctive individuality of creationand creative style of his films and to disclose the artistic value and the limitations ofChang's works.Domestically,there is still a lack of entire,comprehensive and systematic research onChang Tso-Chi director's all cinematographic works to date.This paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter discusses the materials andthematic tendencies of Chang Tso-Chi's works from two perspectives of "bottom view"of Chang's lens focused on Taiwanese bottom society and of Chang's "humanitarian Concern" on marginalized and vulnerable groups.The second chapter mainly analyzeshow the figures of both sexes are shaped and the characteristics of characterization inChang Tso-Chi's films from the two parts of male figures and female figures.The thirdchapter analyzes in details the realism style of Chang Tso-Chi's films from the point of view of image,sound and the artistic processing of the details and the ending.The fourthchapter discusses the artistic value and the limitations of Chang's works.
