Xiuxiejijingguixinshu(绣鞋记警贵新书),also known as Embroidered Shoe(绣鞋记全传),consists of 4 volumes with a total of 20 chapter.This allegorical fiction is originated from the Qing Dynasty and contains Cantonese dialect features.The novel tells about the behavior of Ye Yinzhi(叶荫芝),who came from Guan Yi(莞邑)and worked as manager in the Ministry of Revenue.When he returned to his hometown to observe mourning,he did a lot of evils including raping women and bullying people using the power of his position in the ministry.In the end,he faced his own judgment.The novel used the concept of Karma to educate the reader to be kind hearted,do good,be faithful and be respectful to others.This thesis presents the investigation ofcommon form(俗字)from Xiuxiejijingguixinshu(绣鞋记警贵新书).The investigations were done in 3 different aspects,and is presented in 3 chapters as outlined below.Chapter 1 outlines the current state of this research topic,highlighting the importance of common words and the research method used.Chapter 2 presents the definition of common words and its origin.The common words in Xiuxiejijingguixinshu(绣鞋记警贵新书)are categorized for further discussion.Chapter 3 presents the main findings about common words.The first section discussed about some chosen common words from the novel.The second section focused on the familiar words in dialect,and the common words in dialect from the novel are analyzed.The third section discusses about the erroneous words when the novel was copied.A final section concludes this thesis by presenting the contribution towards the research area and suggested improvement for future works.The thesis presented a first of kind of its kind systematic study of Xiuxiejijingguixinshu(绣鞋记警贵新书).The common words that are discussed in detail are rarely used in other literature from the same erea.This discussion and result supported the other investigations related of the shape of Chinese characters.By combining with the information from other ancient literature,the origin and development of several selected common words are presented.The discussion then focused on the common words that are related to dialect,specifically the Cantonese dialect,and analyzed the evolution of the shape and the meaning of these Chinese characters.In conclusion,the thesis is valuable for the study of common words and the history of Chinese characters.
