With the further development of curriculum reform,the quality and effect of compiling and using English textbooks in primary schools in China have been improved obviously,which plays a more and more important role in promoting and deepening the reform of basic education and improving the quality of quality-oriented education.However,compared with the requirements of the social modernization of our country for the quality of English language,there is still much room for development,There are still many problems in the richness of the content,the value orientation of the textbook,and the rationality of the arrangement structure.The United States is a leading country in the theory and practice of curriculum teaching materials.To explore and learn from the successful experience of compiling Chinese teaching materials in the United States will undoubtedly has great enlightenment and reference value to the improvement and promotion of English textbook compilation in our country.This paper takes the” American literature”,(the Eclectic readers),edited by William H.McGuffey of the United States,as the object of study.The original English version of the textbook is divided into seven levels.Including the Enlightenment Reader and Grade 1-6.Considering that both the first and the first readings are easy to come by,they were introduced into China and merged into Book1.The other grades 2-6 are the same as the original English version.The 1-3 volumes of this set of reading books are similar to the primary school graduation degree in China.Therefore,this paper mainly takes 1-3 volumes as the research object and adopts the literature.Based on the research method,comparative research method andcontent analysis method,this paper makes a comprehensive and in-depth analysis and systematic discussion on the teaching objectives,content selection and structural characteristics of this set of primary school Chinese teaching materials in the United States.According to the analysis results,the selection of McGuffey's American language is lively,classic and interesting.The style of the article is rich and colorful under the premise of being suitable for primary school students.The arrangement structure is simple and clear,the content organization will be linear and spiral,which is beneficial to the elementary school students.According to the characteristics of the textbook,four advice are obtained for primary school English teaching materials in China: the cultural diversity of teaching materials,the diversification of the value orientation of teaching materials,the relationship between textbooks and other subjects,and the emphasis on the oral training of students in the compilation of textbooks.No country can meet the needs of all students in all regions with one set of teaching materials.Therefore,the research and analysis of this set of textbooks is not to compare the shortage of English teaching materials in primary schools in our country,but through an objective analysis.Based on the advantages and disadvantages of this textbook,the compilation structure and value orientation of primary school English textbooks in China are more diversified.Combining the basic national conditions of our country and finally our primary school English teaching materials are better improved and enhanced on the basis of the existing ones.
