In recent years,the South China Sea issue has become one of the international hot issues,which makes China need more International law experts who are familiar with the South China Sea issue to offer advice and suggestions to safeguard China’s territory and sovereignty.Under such circumstances,the translation of English legal treatises on the South China Sea issue will have some social practical significance.This project comprises a report and a translation task.The source text is excerpted from Territorial Disputes in the South China Sea:Navigating Rough Waters which is an international legal book.A researcher on the South China Sea issue entrusts it to the author for translation.He proposes the translation criteria of precise information,legal language and right political orientation,And the project can provide translators with experience in translating English legal treatises,as well as enable the researchers and the persons who are interested in the South China Sea issue to understand different perspectives on the South China Sea issue.In accordance with the features of the textual language and the parallel texts,the author determines that Reiss’ informative text theory is suitable for the text translation and then deduces the translation principles which are the information accuracy principle and formal style principle.Finally,the project can be successfully completed,which are the translation task of the source text of 10,000 English words and the report of 5,000 English words.Under the guidance of the theory,the case analysis is conducted.And it is discovered that the proportion of articles of law and descriptive language,and the corresponding linguistic features in a legal English text decide the application of translation theories,principles and techniques.Therefore,translators of legal English translation should determine the best applicability of translation theories,principles and techniques according to the content and linguistic features of specific legal texts,and should not blindly apply translation theories,principles and techniques.
