The study examines the translation of legislative texts within the framework of Eco-Translatology.It systematically describes the translational eco-environment in which legislative translation occurs, and analyzes the principles, process, and methods of legislative translation which the translator has to “select” in order to “adapt to” the eco-environment.Legislative translational eco-environment is composed of source language and culture, target language and culture, and translation community. To adapt to different components of the eco-environment,the translator should follow different principles: To adapt to the source language eco-environment,he must render his translation accurate,to adapt to the target language eco-environment,he must make the target text professional and readable, and to adapt to the overall eco-environment,he should follow the principle of balance. The process of translation is divided into three stages,namely,pre-translation for a series of preparations, while translation for the accurate comprehension and representation of the original meaning, and post-translation for checking and proofreading. In order to achieve the fittest adaptation and selection, the translator must adopt specific translation methods from linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions. In linguistic dimension, the translator has to use three methods to make the version comply with the structural norms of the target language:following the original syntactic order, rearranging it,and dividing a long and complicated sentence into several shorter and simpler sentences or clauses. In cultural dimension, lexical gap can be tackled in four ways: transliteration, literal translation, liberal translation, and paraphrase. In communicative dimension, the translator should adapt and select according to the intentions of translation community. This study not only enriches studies of legal translation but also contributes to the development of Eco-Translatology.It may also provide reference for learners who are engaged in legal translation and help to guide them towards viewing their translation activity within a holistic ecological system, which can improve their comprehensive ability.
