With the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, there has been an ever increase of necessity in legal translation, intellectual property(IP)legislative texts in particular.Compared with other varieties of legislative texts,IP legislative texts possess distinctive features, which are reflected, inter alia,on the IP legal terms. However, few scholars have ever treated translation of terms in IP legislative texts as an independent object of study or given weight to the techniques of translation of IP legal terms.Based on the E-C translation project of UK Patents Act 2004,this report endeavors to conduct a systematic research on the translation of IP legal terms and put forward solutions to the translation of terms in IP legislative texts. The large number of IP specialized terms and technical words indicate the professionalism of terms in IP legislative texts.Besides, the number of IP legal terms is ever growing at a faster rate than other fields of legislative texts. All these features put together pose a severe challenge for the translator to achieve accuracy and consistency in translating IP legal terms. On the basis of the features of IP legal terms and translation principles, solutions can be proposed under the guide of Eco-translatology:(1)from the perspective of the translator: the translator needs to absorb IP-related legal knowledge and keep contextual awareness in mind;(2)adoption of an exact equivalent where there exists an exact equivalent in the target language, and a functional equivalent where there exists a functional equivalent;(3)adoption of lexical expansion, paraphrasing and neologism where there exists lexical gaps.Solutions discussed above can improve the quality and readability of translation of terms in IP legislative texts.
