| The Secret Garden is one of the representative works of Frances Hodgson Burnett,a famous Anglo-American female writer.After its publication,it has quickly become a best-seller among children literary works at that moment.It has been reprinted many times with numerous editions produced at present,winning a great popularity among readers.In addition,the story of this novel has been shown on various stages and televisions in the forms of movies,animations and dramas,popular among audiences worldwide.Coincidentally,Chinese versions of this novel have been greatly appreciated by Chinese readers as soon as it enters Chinese market.At the same time,these Chinese versions have been paid much attention by translation researchers.In particular,Li Wenjun’ Chinese version has attracted a lot of researchers’ attention,indicating a great potential for researching.Eco-translatology is an original translation theory put forward by professor Hu Gengshen in China and its many core theoretical points are closely related to the translator.For instance,“Translational Eco-environment” is not only a collection restricting translator’s adaptation and selection,but also a premise of translator’s adaptation and selection from multi-dimensional perspectives.“‘Three-dimensional’ Transformations” refer to translator’s adaptive selection and transformation to the translational eco-environment of the source text from perspectives of the cultural,linguistic and communicative dimension.“‘Translator-Centredness’ during Translating” emphasizes translator’s leading role in the process of translating.“Adaptation and Selection” refer to translator’s adaptation to the translational eco-environment and his/her selection of the final translated text in the name of the ‘identity’ of the translational eco-environment.It’s evident that translator’s subjective initiative and creativity are fully displayed at the operational level,that is to say,translator’s subjective role is highlighted “during translating”.After searching via CNKI,the author of this thesis finds that nobody has made a study on Chinese version of The Secret Garden from the perspective of Eco-translatology by now.Many theoretical points of Eco-translatology have been reflected in Li Wenjun’s Chinese version after the author compares it with English version of this novel.In view of this,the thesis intends to explore translator Li Wenjun’s subjectivity displayed in the process of translating The Secret Garden from the perspective of Eco-translatology.In this thesis,some examples are selected from Li Wenjun’s Chinese version,and the author mainly explores his subjectivity displayed “during translating” from the perspective of “‘Three-dimensional’ Transformations” in Eco-translatology,i.e.the cultural,linguistic and communicative dimension.The thesis holds that: from the perspective of the cultural dimension,Translator Li Wenjun’s subjectivity is mainly displayed in two aspects: first,for some western cultural words which are easy to understand literally by Chinese readers,he adopts the strategy of foreignization with an inclination to the cultural ecology of the source text;second,for some cultural words with foreign flavors that are quite unfamiliar to Chinese readers,he mainly adopts a compromised strategy of combining foreignization and domestication,that is to say,the cultural ecologies of both the source and the target texts have been taken into consideration.From the perspective of the linguistic dimension,Translator Li Wenjun’s subjectivity is mainly displayed in four aspects: first,by replacing English dialects with Chinese ones,some images of local characters in the source text are reshaped and the features of their dialects are retained;second,by adding Chinese modal particles,some emotional changes of original characters are reflected;third,by concealing conjunctions in Chinese,some logical relations of original sentences are hidden in the translated version,featuring that English emphasizes the hypotaxis,while Chinese emphasizes the parataxis;fourth,by using Chinese verbs to highlight dynamic pictures,the translated text is made to suit Chinese readers’ taste,featuring that English is a static language,while Chinese is a dynamic one.From the perspective of the communicative dimension,Translator Li Wenjun’s subjectivity is mainly displayed in the following four aspects: first,by using Chinese four-character structures,the beauty of sound in the translated version is enhanced and the interests of Chinese children readers are triggered;second,by replacing English colloquial expressions with Chinese ones,the reading obstacles of Chinese children readers are reduced and an echo among them is made;third,by adding annotations to some English cultural words or expressions unfamiliar to Chinese children readers,it’s good for them to get the correct meaning of the original text;fourth,by reproducing the emphasis mood of the source text in the target one,the translator makes Chinese children readers instantly get to know the meaning of the emphasis implied in the source text.All in all,translator Li Wenjun has brought his subjectivity into factive play in the process of translating The Secret Garden from the perspective of “‘Three-dimensional’ Transformations”,i.e.the cultural,linguistic and communicative dimension,and finally he succeeds in accomplishing the task of adaptive selection and transformation “during translating”.The author studies translator Li Wenjun’s subjectivity displayed in his Chinese version of this novel from the perspective of Eco-translatology,which can broaden research perspectives of its Chinese versions to a certain extent.Moreover,it can prove that translator’s subjectivity plays a decisive role in judging whether the translation is successful or not by studying whether or not the translator Li has succeeded in making an adaptive selection and transformation from the perspectives of the cultural,linguistic and communicative dimension.And then it can provide a new theoretical perspective for translation criticism.In addition,the author hopes this thesis can provide more references for other translators to retranslate this novel in the future. |
