| “Adaptation” and “selection” are the core concepts of ecological translation.Eco-translatology regards translation as “adaptation” and “selection”,and translation is the product of the translator’s adaptation and selection. From the perspective of eco-translatology,the translator must first adapt to the translation ecological environment of the original language and target language, and then select and transform between the language dimension, the cultural dimension, and the communication dimension.Eco-translatology solves the problems of translator’s subjectivity in “selective adaptation” and “adaptive selection”accordingly.Based on the theoretical framework of eco-translatology,this thesis conducts a case study of Goldblatt’s translation of Sandalwood Death for the purpose of observation and investigation of the problems caused by translator’s subjectivity during the process of“selective adaptation” and “adaptive selection” in translation.Through the comparison and analysis of the English translation and the original Chinese text,it could be found that in the first stage, the“selective adaptation”,the translator needs to adapt to the translational eco-environment,including the environment of the source language and the target language. In addition, the translator also needs to adapt to his own needs and capabilities. When adapting to the translational eco-environment of the source and target languages, the methods of transliteration, literal translation with annotations, and substitution are used to transform different phenomena in different translation environments. In the second stage,“adaptive selection”,the translator selects translation methods and strategies through the three dimensions of language, culture, and communication in the specific textual eco-environment,and exerts his own subjectivity in the specific translation process. In the linguistic dimension,Goldblatt uses free translation, adaptation, idiomatic translation and other translation methods to meet the original text in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and rhyme;in the cultural dimension,Goldblatt makes adaptive selections for historical culture, social culture and religious culture, and adopts such translation methods as domestication, substitution, omission and addition to complete the transplantation and compensation of translation ecology at the cultural level;in the communicative dimension,Goldblatt mainly realizes the communicative effect and translation intention in the aspects of rhetorical devices and flexibility of translation. At the same time, this thesis also discusses the deficiencies where Goldblatt’s English translation does not conform to eco-translatology,and proposes the method of localization, with pinyin to replace Goldblatt’s domestication for the English readers. |
