A Study On The Errors Of Anti-Reflective Complex Sentences Among Thai Students In An Advanced Chinese Language Class

The academic research on complex sentences mainly focuses on the broad ontology of complex sentences and smaller classifications of complex sentences.Error studies of certain sentence patterns used in specific types of complex sentences,are also included in this group.There are additional researches on causality of complex sentences,conditional complex sentences,turning complex sentences,concession complex sentences,and progressive complex sentences.Some of these researches are found in the smaller classified complex sentences group,and some involve error analysis.In "specific sentence pattern," there are also many researches on comparative sentences,existential sentences,and concurrent sentences,and most of them involve error analysis with only a few researches on anti-transitive complex sentences.Despite these numerous and varied studies,the research base lacks a process for precise classification.(see figure II for details)In advanced Chinese language instruction,the sentence has important significance,but is situated within a small class of anti-climax complex sentences.Progressive complex sentences are an important element in teaching advanced comprehensives,and consequently are important for developing correct Chinese language skills.For example,in course 1 of a Chinese comprehensive language course,the fourth class begins with an introduction to the grammar of small anti-climax utterances within the following four complex sentences:(1)"bu dan bu,fan er";(2)"mei you,fan er";(3)"bu dan mei you,fan er";(4)"mei,fan dao".This study is based on my teaching experiences at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabha University,Thailand.The research subjects were students of Chinese language.Collection and analysis of data revealed that,when these students began acquiring anti-climax complex sentences,they consistently followed a similar pattern of speaking:"bu dan bu,fan er";"mei you,fan er";"bu dan mei you,fan er";and "mei,fan dao," with high error rates(see Chapter Two).The corpus collection contained 94 anti climax words of "bu dan bu,fan er" 52 of "mei you,fan er," 32 of "bu dan mei you,fan er" 6 words of"mei,fan dao," and only 2 words of "bu dan,fan er".These anti-climax words were correctly used,respectively,"23%" "12.5%" "33.3%" "50%".The data suggests that this type of complex sentence is difficult to acquire.In order to better teach anti-climax complex sentences,I used a natural corpus developed from the interlanguage corpus of Jinan University,the interlanguage corpus of Central China Normal University as well as language collected from students' usual assignments and a survey questionnaire.The purpose of this paper is to find out the types and causes of errors in anti-transitive complex sentences and using interlanguage theory coupled with error analysis,put forward better teaching strategies.The paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction and narrates the purpose,object,scope,method,and summary of the research.The research review includes the research review of bias,the ontology of complex sentences,counter-transitive complex sentences and the research on teaching Chinese as a foreign language(TCFL).The second chapter focuses on analyzing the specific situation of Thai university students learning Chinese.The threefold analysis examines the level of Chinese learning,the development of a natural corpus,and an analysis of the natural language collected from the questionnaire.The third chapter is an analysis of the types of errors in order to determine causation and resolve these errors by providing effective teaching strategies.From the foundation of the natural corpus and questionnaire analysis on the types of errors,from the ontology,two language acquisition and teaching analysis of the causes of errors,and finally put forward a strategic error.Chapter four presents a case study of frequent classroom errors produced by Thai students who are studying advanced Chinese language.Study includes:"No" and verb/adjective collocation,as well as the difference between "instead" and "contrary".The fifth chapter mainly describes a personal reflection,the structure of the article,shortcomings therein,and a summary of my personal outlook.
