Popular fiction is a novel genre that caters for public interest.It is easy to read and popular with wide audience.The selected Little Fires Everywhere is a typical popular fiction.It is listed as the must-read book by the Entertainment Weekly of the Year 2017,and it is regarded as the long-lasting best-seller by the New York Times.This novel explores a wide range of themes,such as race,class,identity,family relationship and so on.Through translating this novel,translator hopes to reproduce the American lifestyle of the twentieth century so as to make Chinese readers find echoes on the themes mentioned above.During translation,translator finds that phraseological units,numerous references and collocation are frequently seen in the novel.These characteristics can easily result in cohesion problem.Therefore,how to handle such cohesion problem is the biggest translation problem that translator met with.According to Halliday and Hasan,proposed in Cohesion in English,there are five cohesive devices,namely reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion.Translator analyzes the cohesive devices of the source text and compares the differences in cohesive devices between Chinese and English.Finally,to narrow the gap between two languages,translator comes up with some specific translation strategies such as omitting personal reference,amplifying the substituted and omitted parts,converting English explicit conjunctions into Chinese implicit conjunctions and reproducing the lexical cohesion.
