Everything I Never Told You,the first novel by the Chinese American writer Celeste Ng,has been on the top of the Amazon Booklist of the Year 2014.As a novel of profound significance,it explores a wide range of themes including race, gender, family affection, alienation, identity and personal achievement. In translating this novel, the author intends to show Chinese readers what the United States was like in the 1970 s,and hopes to provoke their thought on the themes mentioned above. In recent years, with China's culture market opening to the outside world,English novels have been popular with Chinese readers. However, literary critics claim that such novels are purely fabricated and cliched. As a matter of course, they have not drawn adequate attention in the translation circles. In the wake of the translation of the selected chapters of the novel, the writer comes up with some methods to cope with the problems that she encountered in the formidable task. The novel is written in plain language and filled with elliptical sentences, but devoid of complex sentences. The biggest problem that the translator met with is how to use proper cohesive devices to realize semantic coherence in translation. In the light of Halliday and Hasan's cohesive devices: reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion, the author first analyzes the cohesive devices of the source text, and then tries to find out the differences between the cohesive devices in the Chinese and English texts before she comes up with translation methods such as reproduction, omission, amplification and conversion to make the target text fluent in expression and coherent in meaning.
