Application Of Cohesion In Translating Classical Chinese Poetry

As to disseminating Chinese culture to promote international communication, more and more domestic scholars put English translation of Chinese classics as a way of efficacious carrier. Apart from the specific intercultural and interlingual translation activity, classical Chinese poetry as the unique part of Chinese classics in translation is similarly concerned with more of multidisciplinary translatology. Recently, many a scholar conducts the researches on Chinese classics translation from many perspectives, of which researches on cohesion and coherence have unceasingly mushroomed. The pioneers constantly pay much attention to a variety of cohesion phenomena within general texts, while cohesion is also prevailing in translating classical Chinese poetry. The significance of this thesis, for the translators, follows that it will provide more different perspectives on cohesion in order to obtain the same original taste and the same coherence effects with the original poems.In order to make poetry translation go on wheels, many factors have been touching upon their influences. This thesis explores the cohesion in translating classical Chinese poetry from the aspect of cohesive devices. Firstly, it introduces its value, purpose and method, and then briefly tracks down the historical background and new development on cohesion both at home and abroad. Next, it employs the interrelated concept and theory of cohesion to expound the relative kinds of cohesion phenomena, which tries to give a direct, fresh, unique exploratory interpretation through case studies in classical Chinese poetry. The illustrated cases are mainly chosen from Tang and Song Dynasties. These cohesive devices are composed of Halliday's cohesive devices including reference, substitution, ellipsis, collocation and lexical cohesion, rhetorical cohesive device, etc..Through a cohesive analysis of classical Chinese poetry, this thesis aims to illustrate that translators, in undertaking the English translation in classical Chinese poetry, have to pay more attention to the differentiation cohesion in different cases of poetry. And cohesion as the important semantic position, importance should also be attached to employ the different cohesive devices vividly. This research provides, cohesive devices in translating classical Chinese poetry, that translators should not only focus on image construction but also on form connection. Translators have to make a compromise to obtain the coherence with the help of cohesion to aim to retain the equivalent aesthetic function as the original poems.
