Since the “One Guideline,Multiple Textbooks” policy issued,a good variety of textbooks had emerged.And schools started to make their own choice of teaching materials.Most primary schools in Dongguan City,Guandong Province adopted PEP version of primary English textbooks(PEP primary English).However Dongguan Foreign Language School has its own choice to use the Oxford version of primary English textbooks(AFF primary English)introduced from England.The analysis of these two sets of primary English textbooks will help the schools and teachers choose and use the textbook better.This study is based on the intrinsic and extrinsic teaching material evaluations put forward by Chen Xiaotang,using literature research,comparative analysis and questionnaires research methods to investigate the following three questions:(1)the difference in interior structures between these two sets of primary English textbooks;(2)the teacher and students' evaluation;(3)using suggestions for future use.The study results indicates there are some differences in the internal structures of these two sets of primary English textbooks.For instance,the guiding ideology of PEP primary English is more specific and it's more appropriate for the Communicative approach.While the AFF primary English is richer in contents,more applicable in Task-based approach and its language materials are closer to real life.The students' evaluation on AFF primary English is higher than PEP primary English while the teachers hold different views.Given the merits and demerits of these two sets of primary English textbooks,the author suggests that: in using PEP primary English teachers should properly supply compensatory knowledge to students,offer supplementary explanations to some parts of the content,and add some real language materials.In utilizing AFF primary English,teachers should combine the old and new knowledge in teaching,cut out the redundant contents,add some supplement materials with writing parts and prepare their lessons adequately.
