| This study report is a summary and analysis on the E-C translation of Peace Pilgrim under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,in order to propose translation methods and strategies for the source text and provide a reference for the same type of text. The Functional Equivalence Theory mainly focuses on the reader’s reaction and emphasizes the equivalent translation. Therefore,Functional Equivalence Theory can guide the translation of biographical literature. This report is guided by the Functional Equivalence Theory and makes a detailed study on the translation of Chapter Two and Chapter Three of Peace Pilgrim. The author adopts methods such as literature review, comparison between languages and case analysis, and proposes that the translation of biography has the features of plain language and strong subjective consciousness. So the translation should keep the writing features of source language and transmit the emotion of characters. With the combination of theory and text, translation methods were put forward from semantic equivalence and formal equivalence respectively. In the case study, the author lists representative problems, such as culture-loaded words,emotion-loaded words, adverbs, appeal sentence, movement description, dialogue and other translation difficulties from vocabulary, sentence and discourse level, and then proposes solutions. To achieve functional equivalence between two languages and transmit message and emotion clearly and accurately, the translator should combine free translation and literal translation strategies and adopt words conversion、inversion、division、combination and other methods. |
