| This thesis is a translation practice report on English-Chinese translation. The source text is an excerpt of biographical literature titled as Little Shoes from Chapter 29 to Chapter38,which is written by Pamela Everett. The source content started with a genuine case of child sexual offenses and murder happened in the author’s family. The selected parts describe the trial process of the case, mainly about the defense plots of the lawyers of both sides and the relevant details of the case. The source text is characterized by the description of details and dialogues with attractive and readable plots. The translator, under the guidance of the supervisor, chooses the theory of Functional Equivalence proposed by Eugene A.Nida as the theoretical guidance.Based on the source content and the purpose of achieving functional equivalence, various methods are applied in the translation process.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory,at the lexical level, both literal translation and liberal translation are adopted to make the translation more concise and readable. At the syntactic level, the translation methods of amplification, omission, and division are applied to achieve linguistic equivalence and are more in line with the expression style of the target reader. The report is divided into four chapters: Chapter One mainly introduces the background, task analysis, and tool preparation.Chapter Two is the case analysis, also the core of the report, which mainly aims at analyzing the difficulties encountered in the translation process, such as the proverbs, long sentences, sentence restructuring, and four-character structure.Chapter Three is the assessment, assessing the translation from three aspects. The last is the conclusion,in which the gains and deficiencies in the translation process are summarized. The translator hopes that the translation can draw domestic readers’ attention to the case of child sexual offenses. In addition, the reader who likes such kind of works can benefit from the translation and contribute to the translation of biographical literature. |
