This is a report on the translation of The History of Bashu Culture: The Meandering Jinjiang River(excerpts from Chapter Two).This book was written by Duan Yu and Tan Luofei,who are Professors of Sichuan Normal University.It is mainly about the development of the Bashu culture.The second chapter of this book is mainly about the ancient civilization of Bashu,including the temporal and spatial framework of the ancient civilization of Bashu region,the prelude to the land of abundance,ancient writing and the brilliant bronze culture and etc.The source text of the translation report belongs to an informative text,and the translation of this chapter can not only help to spread the Bashu culture,but also help the foreign readers to appreciate the rich and colorful Bashu culture,as well as its profound history and civilization.During the translation process,the translations of long and complicated sentences and technical terms are the key and difficult problems to be solved.To figure them out and make the translation more accurate,the translator uses Vermeer’s Skopos theory to guide his translation.The Skopos theory mainly consists of the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.In Vermeer’s theory,the skopos rule means that the translator should clarify his purpose in a given translation context and decide which translation method should be adopted;the coherence rule is that the target text should be readable and acceptable;and the fidelity rule is that the target text ought to be faithful to the original text.During the translation process,the translator uses the following translation skills like literal translation,conversion,inversion,and division etc.to solve the key and complicated problems under the guidance of the three principles.By using these techniques,the quality of the translation is improved and the translation becomes more accurate,communicative and coherent.
