With the accelerated economic development and the cultural stepping-out strategy in Hunan province,the distinctive local culture captures more attention at home and abroad.In this translation practice report,the author studies the translation project of"Hunan Ceramic Language",exploring how to apply foreignization strategy in addressing translation problems and spreading distinctive local ceramic technologies and culture in a flexible and faithful way.The source text including Artistic Features and Contemporary Performance of Under-glazed Wucai in Liling and Artistic Charm of Millennium Changsha Kiln introduces Hunan local traditional ceramics and presents a vivid and detailed introduction of traditional ceramic technologies and types.The target readers of the translated version include ceramists at both home and abroad,scholars and ceramic lover.Through analyzing the translated version of the source text,the report explores the advantages of foreignization strategy in cross-cultural translation.Under the guidance of fidelity rule and flexibility rule,the author proceeds from the characteristics of local ceramics and makes an analysis of the translation of ceramic producing technology,ceramic title,glazing technique,decorating technology and etc.with the aim of illustrating the application and expressiveness of some translation techniques of foreignization such as transliteration,literal translation,annotation,addition and omission and so on,which intends to provide readers both at home and abroad with better understanding and appreciation of local traditional ceramics.Through the analysis,the author finds that in ceramic translation,some translation techniques of foreignization including transliteration,literal translation,annotation and so on can be used to spread distinctive local ceramic culture faithfully.But it may reduce the readability of the translated version and make readers feel perplexed.
