The source text is excerpted from the second chapter of The Wisdom To Choose, which is the work of American couple Dixon Arnett and Wende Dawson Chan, who are both experts on medical care for senior citizens. The book, concise in language and with many colloquial expressions, mainly introduces the ideal life for the elderly, the methods of a healthy senior life and the influence of environmental and financial factors on the life of senior citizens. This translation report on The Wisdom To Choose consists of four parts, namely, the description of the translation task, which gives the basis and significance of choosing this text and a brief introduction of the book and its authors;the translation procedure, which introduces the preparations before translating, selection of translation methods and auxiliary tools, problems during the translation and the long road coming to the final version;case study, which analyzes typical examples selected in lexical and syntactic levels;and the conclusion, which is the experience learning from this practice.Among the four, the key part is case study,in which the author carries out the analysis of difficulties in lexical and syntactic levels with specific cases using translation skills such as semantic extension, conversion, amalgamation of short sentences and division of long sentences. After this translation practice, the author realizes the importance of translation tools and learns that the mastery of English plays a significant role in determining the quality of translated text and that profound knowledge of Chinese is the icing on the cake.
