Popular scientific articles are essential media that record the scientific process and disseminate the scutting-edgedevelopment of scientific researches.In a digital and globalized age,translation of scientific popular articles helps to spread the achievements of scientific researches to every corner of the world and plays a significant role in elevating the education level,promoting the advancement of science and technology and accelerating economic development of all countries.At the same time,the popular scientific article involves vast volume of scientific terminology,different subject background knowledge,and complex text and language characteristics,all of which adds to the difficulty of translating popular science articles.A large number of translated popular scientific works that lacks credence and qualification arises.How to solve these challenging problems is very worthy of attention.So the study ofthe translation of popular scientific articles with guidance of scientific theory is crucially in need.The thesis first briefly summarizes the studies in recent years made by scholars on the translation of scientific popular articles.It shows that these studies focus on both the analysis of the style and linguistic features of popular scientific articles and the principles and methods for their translation.Then,Reiss’s theory of Text Typology and her classification of text types are introduced.Consistent with Karl Buhler’s language function theory,Reiss divides texts into three types,namely,informative,expressive and appellative,and elaborates the linguistic features,language functions and the translation methods of each text type.After that,popular scientific articles are briefly introduced.It explains the text types and analyses the linguistic features of popular scientific articles including Making Modern Science:A Historical Survey.With regard to text type,English popular scientific articles belong to the informative text with some features of the expressive text.Thus,they mainly focus on the accurate transmission of information and in the meantime emphasize some expressive functions.And the characteristics of popular scientific articles include a large number of professional terms,logically-organized long sentences,use of vivid rhetorical devices and direct speeches.With the text types and linguistic features of popular scientific articles in view and taking the translation of Making Modern Science:A Historical Survey as a case study,the thesis explores and summarizes the principles and methods for the E-C translation of popular scientific articles from the perspective of text typology theory.It maintains that the adoption of translation methods such as literal translation,addition,reconstruction and etc.can facilitate the accurate transmission of the source text’s content and effectively reproduce the original effect of rhetoric expressions. |
