Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy on clinical indicators and metabolic level of blood glucose of diode laser(DL)-assisted ultrasound combined with manual subgingival scaling and root planning(SRP)in treating chronic periodontitis accompanied by Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).Methods: 17 with patients of chronic periodontitis with T2 DM were randomly divided into two groups:Control Group(n=8): the original blood glucose control plan + SRP treatment;Experimental Group(n=9): the original blood glucose control plan + SRP + DL treatment..Three months after treatment, patients’ periodontal probing depth(PD),bleeding index(BI),plaque index(PLI),attachment loss(AL)and other clinical indicators and fasting plasma glucose(FPG),glycosylated hemoglobin(Hb A1c)and other metabolic indicators of blood glucose in Experimental Group and Control Group before and after treatment were observed and compared, and patients’ adverse reactions during and after treatment were recorded. The SPSS Statistics version 22.0software was used for the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the study. It had statistical significance when P<0.05 and had no statistical significance when P>0.05.Results: After 3 months of treatment,BI and PLI of the two groups of patients decreased compared with those before treatment, with statistical significance(P<0.05),while there was no statistical significance in changes of BI and PLI in inter-group comparison(P>0.05).After 3 months of treatment,PD in both groups decreased with statistical significance(P<0.05).In inter-group comparison,PD in SRP+ DL Group decreased more significantly with statistical significance(P<0.05).There was no significant change in AL before and after treatment in the two groups, without statistical significance(P>0.05).After 3 months of treatment, the level of Hb A1 c in the two groups decreased, with statistical significance(P<0.05).In inter-group comparison, the level of Hb A1 c in SRP+ DL Group decreased more, without statistical significance(P>0.05).Compared with before treatment,FPG levels of the two groups decreased after 3 months, without statistical significance(P>0.05).During the experiment,no adverse reactions were found in the two groups of patients.Conclusion:(1)DL-assisted SRP can promote healing of periodontal tissues and decrease the depth of periodontal pocket in patients with chronic periodontitis accompanied by T2 DM.(2)Periodontal therapy may be helpful to improve the metabolism level of blood glucose of patients with chronic periodontitis accompanied by T2 DM,but the long-term effect on the metabolism level of blood glucose needs further study and observation.
