Objective: This study aims to observe the effect and safety of Tongtuzhengji massage combined with Tongtuhuayu prescription in the treatment of blood stasis syndrome of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy through the clinical study, providing evidence for its clinical application. Methods: This study adopted a prospective, randomized, and parallel-group design. One hundred ten cases diagnosed with cervical spondylotic radiculopathy with TCM syndrome of Qi stagnation and blood stasis were chosen and divided into the treatment group(55 cases)and the control group(55 cases)with the help of a random number table. The treatment group was given Tongduzhengji massage therapy(once every other day)and Tongduhuayu prescription(granule, one dose per day taken by two times). The control group received routine massage therapy(once every other day)and Jingshu granules(One bag at a time, three times per day, taken after meals). The course of treatment lasted for receiving the Tongduzhengji massage therapy for ten times. The treatment effects of Tongtuohuayu method in relieving pain and improving clinical symptoms and signs, and also its adverse reactions were observed.Data collected were analyzed by SAS 8.2.Results:1.Comparison of clinical signs and symptoms after treatment: the recovery rate of the treatment group was 59.61%,while that of the control group was 28.84%(P < 0.05).The total effective rate was 94.23% in the treatment group and 86.53% in the control group(P < 0.05),indicating the clinical efficacy of the treatment group was better than the control group. The therapeutic effect of TCM syndromes after treatment was also compared: the recovery rate of the treatment group was 67.61%,while the control group was 30.76%.The effective rate in the treatment group was 96%,while the control group was 92.31%.The difference in the therapeutic effect of TCM syndromes between the two groups was statistically significant(P < 0.05),suggesting the therapeutic effect of TCM syndromes in the treatment group was better than that in the control group.2.After treatment, there were statistically significant differences in the visual analogue scale(VAS)of pain scale between the two groups(P<0.05),and statistically significant differences in the scores of pain between groups(P<0.05),indicating the curative effect of the treatment group was better than the control group. There were also statistically significant differences in the treatment effects of some symptoms, including neck pain, shoulder and back pain, neck movement, upper limb numbness, neck and shoulder tenderness, intervertebral foramina compression test, and sensory impairment(P < 0.05).Comparing the efficacy in reducing upper limb pain, the effective rate of the treatment group was higher than that of the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant(P > 0.05).There were only a few positive cases in both of the two groups in comparison of the treatment effect in upper limb muscle strength and tendon reflex, and the difference was not statistically significant(P > 0.05).3.During the treatment period, there were no other discomforts unrelated to the disease reported in the two groups. No apparent adverse reactions caused by the treatments were found in both groups. Conclusion:The clinical effect of Tongtuzhengji massage therapy combined with Tongtuhuayu prescription for internal and external treatment in the treatment of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy is good. The method of Tongduhuayu has an apparent curative effect on TCM syndromes of patients of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy with blood stasis syndrome. It is effective in improving the main symptoms and signs of neck and shoulder pain, neck movement, and neck and shoulder tenderness. No adverse reactions had occurred during the study. The method of Tongduhuayu in the treatment of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy of blood stasis syndrome is of sound effect and high safety, and it is worthy of promoting its clinical application further.
