Objective: To investigate the orthodontic treatment need of children aged 8~10 years in Chongqing, investigate the effect of malocclusion on selfesteem of children and to provide theoretical support for the prevention and treatment of preadolescent malocclusion. Methods: According to standards of the Fourth National Oral Health Epidemiological sampling survey,1588 children were selected from 12 schools in 3 urban areas and 3 counties of Chongqing by multistage, stratified, cluster and random sampling from October to December 2018.The part of tooth health of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need(IOTN)was used to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need based on dental health and oral function. The aesthetic part of the IOTN was used to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need based on dental appearance. The part of general self-perception profile of The Harter's Self-perception Profile for Children was used to evaluate the self-esteem.The data were by SPSS 20.0 statistically.Statistical descriptions and chi-square tests were required for the orthodontic treatment need.Single factor analysis(Wilcoxon rank sum test,Kruskal Wallis rank sum test)and multiple factor analysis(multiple linear regression)were used to analyze the influential factors of self-esteem.Results: According to DHC-IOTN(dental health component): 132(8.3%)of the subjects showed definite orthodontic treatment need(4~5 grade),397(25.0%)subjects showed moderate(3grade)need,and 1059(66.6%)subjects showed light treatment need(1~2grade).According to AC-IOTN(aesthetic component): 71(4.5%)subjects showed definite orthodontic treatment need(8~10grade),124(7.8%)subjects showed moderate(5~7grade)need,and 1393 subjects showed(87.7%)light treatment need(1~4grade).There were significant differences in DHC results among different age groups(P < 0.05).AC results showed that there were significant differences among different age groups, between urban and rural areas, ethnic minorities and Han nationalities(P< 0.05).Orthodontic treatment need IOTN-AC(moderate;severe),overjet(severe: 6 ~ 9 mm,> 9 mm),anterior crossbite, open bite were negatively correlated with self-esteem(P < 0.05).Conclusion: The need of orthodontic treatment of children aged 8 to 10 years in Chongqing is high, and orthodontic treatment need based on dental appearance and malocclusion especially the types that have great influence on beauty obviously affect the self-esteem.In response to this phenomenon, relevant health administrative departments should enhance the publicity and education of prevention and treatment knowledge of malocclusion, meanwhile dentists should not ignore the impact of malocclusion on children's psychology, timely intervene in the malocclusion that has a great impact on psychology, reduce the psychological burden of children, and promote their physical and mental health.
