Objectives1.To analysis the influential factors of self-directed learning ability of undergraduate nursing students.2.To develop a concept map teaching model based on self-directed learning ability.3.To evaluate the effects of the concept map teaching model on the self-directed learning ability of undergraduate nursing students and the reflection ability of teachersMethodsAn action research approach which included five stages was applied in this study.First stage was to identify the learning problem.Our teaching observations found that some nursing students was lack of the self-directed learning ability.A recent systematic review also revealed that the self-directed learning ability of undergraduate nursing students was at a medium level and needs to be further improved.Second stage was to analyze the problem.Cross-sectional survey and focus groups interview were conducted to clarify the influential factors affecting the self-directed learning ability of nursing students.The findings suggested that a concept map teaching model may be possible solution to improve the students' self-directed learning.Third stage was to make the plan.Our research group initially developed a concept map teaching mode oriented by self-directed learning ability based on literatures reviewing,theoretical analysis and the syllabus of nursing research.Fourth stage was to implemente the plan.The concept map teaching model was used in the course of Nursing Research of the midwifery nursing students,the problems and suggestions of the teachers and students to the concept map teaching model based on self-directed learning ability were collected through observations and face-to-face depth interviews.Through the threeround theoretical class and the two-round experimental class of action research,the concept map teaching model based on self-directed learning ability was finally formed.The fifth stage was to evaluate the effects of the developed model.The questionnaire survey,observations and interviews were used to to evaluate the effects of the developed model.Results1.The concept map teaching mode oriented by self-directed learning ability,which is suitable for teachers and students was developed.This teaching model takes "L.E.A.R.N.S.model" as the theoretical guidance,the concept map as the main line,teachers as the leading,students as the main body,through the "learning,teaching,evaluation,thinking" teaching link to improve students' independent learning ability.2.The findings showed that the concept map teaching was effective to improve the students' self-directed learning ability and cognitive strategies.However,no significant difference was detected in the total score of learning strategies and its dimensions(P>0.05).Additionally,the students generally affirmed the concept map teaching model.The interviews to teachers and student also showed the validity and feasibility of the concept map teaching model.Conclusions1.This study adopted the action research method to develop a concept map teaching model based on self-directed learning ability,which is acceptable and feasible in teaching.2.The concept map teaching mode based on self-directed learning ability could improve nursing undergraduates' the self-directed learning ability and meaningful learning and promote teachers better understand teaching materials,think deeply about concepts,learn and think actively,facilitate teaching feedback and reflection and the organization and presentation of teaching content.
