Objective:To analyze the clinical characteristics of medullary thyroid carcinoma and the significance of serum calcitonin detection,so as to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.Methods:41 patients with medullary thyroid cancer admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January 2011 to September 2016 were retrospectively analyzed.41 patients were treated with surgery. The relationship between preoperative sCTN(serum calcitonin)levels and tumor size, lymph node metastasis, capsule invasion, distant metastasis, and tumor stage was analyzed. Results:Preoperative sCTN levels was elevated in 35 patients, but it was little statistical significance between serum calcitonin level and clinical classification, tumor size, multiple or single lesions(P > 0.05).However patients with tumor envelop invasion compared with those without tumorenvelop invasion, patients with lymph node metastasis compared with those who have no lymph node metastasis and patients with stage III-IV compared with those in stage I-II,preoperative sCTN level was significantly increased(P<0.05).Conclusion:The level of calcitonin before surgery is related to whether the tumor capsule is invaded, lymph node metastasis or clinical stage, suggesting that serum calcitonin level can provide reference for preoperative diagnosis, selection of methods, evaluation of prognosis and detection of recurrence and metastasis.
