In daily life, people often present individual differences in sports, cognition, personality and emotions, but the neural mechanisms of such individual behavior differences are yet unclear. At present, the exploration of this problem has become a research hotspot in the field of cognitive neuroscience.Grip strength, vocabulary ability and fluid intelligence are one of the typical behavior indicators to evaluate the level of motor ability, language ability and cognitive ability, respectively. The purpose of the present study is to explore the neural mechanisms of the individual differences in grip strength, vocabulary ability and fluid intelligence based on structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging technology by combining with an elastic network prediction model, and thereby reveal the relationship between the neural substrates and behavior. The present study included 1206 healthy adult subjects. The magnetic resonance imaging data and corresponding behavioral test data related to grip strength, vocabulary ability and fluid intelligence were provided by the Human Connectome Project(HCP).In the present study, based on each of structural magnetic resonance imaging data and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, three elastic net models were established to predict these three behavioral abilities, respectively, and the relationship between each of these three behavioral ability levels and the neural substrate was revealed. It also was discussed that which brain structural features and functional connections between brain regions play an important role in these behaviors. The main findings of this study are the following four points: First, there is a close relation between the cerebellum and grip strength.Second, vocabulary ability is mainly related to specific areas of the left brain such as the left inferior frontal gyrus and the left inferior parietal gyrus.Third, there is a close relation between the frontal lobe and fluid intelligence.Fourth, for healthy adults, their neural substrates present the relatively strong correlation to physical ability, but the relatively weak correlation to cognitive ability. The present study is a preliminary exploration of the neural mechanisms of individual behavior differences, which initially reveals the neural correlates of grip strength, vocabulary ability and fluid intelligence, and is helpful to provide important theoretical and experimental clues to reveal the neural mechanism of individual behavior differences.
