Objective This study randomly selected 5?12-year-old children in Nanjing as the research object,to explore, study of grip strength in the process of aging changes in characteristics and gender, right and left hand. This study aimed to evaluate the development of grip and pinch strength objectively, providing a basis for the further clinical and establish norms of hand grip strength for 5?12 year-old children in Nanjing. Methods Methods By multi-stage stratified random sampling method,1255 children aged 5?12 years old from 6 kindergarten and 6 primary school of Nan-jing city were selected as survey venues, who did not have physiological, orthopedic, and cognitive dysfunction. The Martin Vigorimeter,Pinch gauge were used for grip strength and pinch strength tests. The height measured with a wall-mounted stadiometer.Result1?Grip strength1.1 General characteristics of the grip strength of 5?12years children in Nanjing Data were described as meaną(SD),P5?P25?P75?P9s.1.2 Development characteristics of the grip strength of 5?12years children in Nanjing(1)Development of grip strength in relation to age The present study showed grip strength appeared to increase across all of the age groups(P<0.05);(2)Development of grip strength in relation to gender This study also showed that grip strength for boys were significantly stronger than that of girls up to 9years(P<0.05),after which grip strength was approximately parallel for both genders(P>0.05);(3)Development of grip strength in relation to both hands Significant difference were found between both hands from 8 to 12 years old(P<0.05);2?Pinch strength2.1 Palmar pinch strength2.1.1 General characteristics of the palmar pinch strength of 5?12years children in Nanjing Data were described as meaną(SD),P5?P25?P75?P95.2.1.2 Development characteristics of the palmar pinch strength of 5?12years children in Nanjing(1)Development of palmar pinch strength in relation to age The present study showed palmar pinch strength appeared to increase across all of the age groups(P<0.05);(2)Development of palmar pinch strength in relation to gender This study showed that palmar pinch strength for boys were significantly stronger than that of girls up to 11 years, after which palmar pinch strength was approximately parallel for both genders(P>0.05);(3)Development of palmar pinch strength in relation to both hands Palmar pinch strength of right hand was higher than left hand until 7years(P<0.05);2.2 Tip pinch strength2.2.1 General characteristics of the tip pinch strength of 5?12years children in Nanjing Data were described as meaną(SD),P5?P25?P75?P95.2.2.2 Development characteristics of the tip pinch strength of 5?12years children in Nanjing(1)Development of tip pinch strength in relation to age The present study showed tip pinch strength appeared to increase across all of the age groups(P<0.05);(2)Development of tip pinch strength in relation to gender This study showed that tip pinch strength for boys were significantly stronger than that of girls from 5?12years(P<0.05);(3)Development of tip pinch strength in relation to both hands Tip pinch strength of right hand was higher than left hand until 9years(P<0.05);(4)Comparison of palmar pinch strength and tip pinch strength This study concluded that palmar pinch strength appeared to be greater than tip pinch strength(P<0.05);2.3?Correlations between hand strength(grip strength, pinch strength)and body measures(height, hand size)Strong correlations existed between hand strength(grip strength, pinch strength)and height weight and hand size(P<0.05).Conclusion The reported values of this study provided an important referred data of pinch strength, and enabled us to identify some developmental characte ristics of grip strength and pinch strength for children according to the age, gender, both hands and body measures(height, hand size),and providing a basis for the Children with dysgraphia.
