Objective: Using self-made carbomer oral moisturizing gel and traditional thirst nursing methods,a comparative intervention study was performed on ICU patients who met the inclusion criteria. The changes of thirst relief and comfort degree of the two methods were observed and compared, and the application of new gel preparation in ICU patients thirsty wasdiscussed. Methods: From January 1,2019 to December 31,2019,ICU patients who met the inclusion criteria were selected in a tertiary first-class hospital for intervention study. The patients were randomly divided into control group and experimental group with random number table. The control group moistened the patients' oral cavity with cotton swabs and the experimental group moistened the oral cavity with self-made carbomer oral moisturizing gel.The thirsty changes during fasting water within 24 hours after the two groups being enrolled in the group were observed. The thirst score and resting saliva flow rate before and after the intervention were recorded respectively,as well as the time and intervention times required for patients from thirst to involuntary thirst. The SPSS21.0 software package was used for data processing, and P<0.05 was considered statisticallysignificant.Results:1.100 patients were finally included in the thirst intervention study, including 50 patients in the control group and 50 patients in the test group. Before the intervention, there was no significant difference in baseline data, thirst VAS score and resting saliva flow rate between the two groups(P > 0.05).After the intervention, the difference of thirst VAS score and resting saliva flow rate between the two groups was statistically significant(P<0.05),whichconfirmedthatthetwointerventionmethodswereeffectiveandthe effect of the experimental group was better than that of the control group.2.The number of interventions required by the two groups of patients from thirst to conscious non-thirst was(3.660±0.961)in the test group and(4.800±0.990)in the control group. The statistical results showed that the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The number of interventions in the test group was less, which could save human resources and reduce the workload of nursingstaff.3.The time required for the two groups of patients to change from thirsty to not thirsty was(3.360±0.921)in the experimental group and(3.920±0.922)in the control group. The statistical results showed that the difference was statistically significant(P < 0.05).The time required for the patients in the experimental group to relieve thirst was shorter and the efficiency washigher.4.The differences in cost and satisfaction between the two groups were statistically significant(P < 0.05).The results showed that the experimental group was more economical andsatisfied.Conclusions:1.Self-made carbomer oral moisturizing gel could effectively relieve thirst of ICU patients duringfasting.2.Compared with the traditional cotton swab dipped in water to moisten the oral cavity, the self-made carbomer gel could reduce the frequency of thirst and the number of interventions required, with bettereffect.3.Self-made carbomer oral gel could reduce the intervention cost of thirsty patients, economic burden and increase patientsatisfaction.
