Objective To investigate the safety of preoperative oral energy mixture and its effect on gastrointestinal function in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. Methods Twenty five elderly patients with elective laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, aged 65-80 yeras,BMI 18-23,were randomly allocated to energy mixture group?group A,n=11?and fasting group?group B,n=11?.Group A was given oral carbohydrates200ml at preoperative 2 h,while the Group B was fasted 8 to 12 hours. All patients received assessment of preoperative felling of thirsy, hunger and anxiety,30minutes before anesthesia ultrasound measurement of gastric antrum in supine and right lateral positions and were given semi-quantitative grading.By collecting fasting venous blood, measurement plasma gastrointestinal hormones:The plasma level of motilin?MTL?,diamine oxidase?DAO?,insulin-like growth factor-1?IGF-1?were determined by ELISA preoperatively and 1,3,7d after operation in the two groups. The first exhaust time, the first normal diet time and the time of postoperative hospital stay were recorded. Results Compared with group B,group A was endured less thirst, hunger and anxiety??P<0.05??.There was no signigicant difference in the grade of Perlas semi-quantitative before surgery between two groups.Inter-group comparison:MTLand IGF-1 concentrations were signigicantly higher in group A on the 1stday after operation than that in group B.DAO concentrations was obviously lower in group A on the 1stand 3rddays after operation than that in group B.Intra-group comparison:group A and group B showed a marked decrease in MTL and IGF-1 concentrations on the 1stday postoperative compared with preoperative??P<0.05??;group A and B showed a significant increase in DAO concentrations on the 1stand 3rddays postoperative compared with preoperative??P<0.05??.The first exhaust time, the first normal diet time and the time of postoperative hospital stay in the group A were obviously less than that in the group B?P<0.05?.Conclusion Oral administration of 200ml energy mixture before operation in elderly patients with colorectal cancer is safe and effective, which can promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function, reduce the damage of intestinal mucosal barrier and accelerate the recovery of patients.
