Status Survey On Enema Reduction Of Pediatric Intussusception In China

Objective Intussusception is a common pediatric abdominal emergency in infants.The first-line treatment of choice in uncomplicated intussusception is enema reduction.The purpose of this study is to investigate the status of acute intussusception enema reduction in children.Methods A questionnaire on enema reduction of pediatric intussusception was sent to the respondents(members of the pediatric anorectal group,neonatal group,Society of Pediatric Surgery,China Medical Association),to assess the monitoring device,media substance,equipment used,technical details,staffing,use of sedatives,success rate of reduction,number of perforations,etc.Results 128 questionnaires were included in the data analysis.Of these,78.1(100/128)use fluoroscopy,17.2%(22/128)use ultrasound monitoring;78.9%(101/128)use air,17.9%(23/128)use normal saline;78.9%(101/128)achieve success rate of 90%;pediatric surgeon managed the reduction in 25.8%(33/128)of respondents,radiologist managed the reduction in 18.8%(24/128)of respondents,pediatric surgeon and radiologist managed the reduction together in 44.5%(57/128)of respondents.Conclusion There is a wide variation in the techniques of enema reduction of intussusception in China.Fluoroscopy guided air enema reduction is mainly used.Enema reduction of uncomplicated cases of pediatric intussusception in China lacks standardization of equipment and personnel involved.
