Medieval universities are the source and the precious spiritual heritage of modern universities.The development experience of medieval universities can provide references for modern universities.As two older medical schools,Salerno and Montpellier Medical Schools are in the early stage of the formal establishment of the medieval medical school.The two medical schools are in a similar era and position,but their development destinies are quite different.Based on the basic elements of running a university,this paper makes an analysis for their destinies,and makes an attributive analysis for their different destiny development trajectories to gain a clearer insight into the development of higher education.At first,this paper sorts out the origin and development of the two medical schools,analyzes the factors that affect the establishment of the them,and grasps the historical evolution from the source and development of the two medical schools.Management mechanism,training mechanism and discipline construction are the main factors for running a university.This paper starts from these three aspects to conduct a systematic analysis of the two medical schools.Firstly,it sorts out and analyzes the management mechanisms of the two medical schools.This paper divides them into three levels,such as administrative management,teacher management,and student management.Then it analyzes their similarities and differences.The administrative management system of Montpellier Medical School is relatively sound,and this school has a well-developed guild of teachers and students,while the management system of Salerno Medical School is relatively vague,which lacks of teachers and students guild;Secondly,this paper focuses on the training mechanism of the two medical schools,and conduct a systematic analysis from the curriculum setting and degree system.The two medical schools both have their own curriculum system and degree system.However,compared with Salerno Medical School,the curriculum of Montpellier Medical School is more rigorous and institutionalized,and the degree system is more comprehensive and systematic;Thirdly,this paper focuses on the discipline construction of the two medical schools,and analysis the similarities and differences from the perspectives of medical theory and teaching,the development and improvement of the disciplines,and the works of the medical schools.Both medical schools have unique medical theories and rich medical works.But as the oldest medical institution,the theories and works of Salerno Medical School are more abundant.However,in the discipline construction,Salerno Medical School has only a single medical discipline,while Montpellier Medical School has a comprehensive development of literature and law disciplines apart from medical disciplines.This paper concludes with attribution analysis of the different development fate of the two medical schools.The guild system is the solid foundation of the university.Whether it has a perfect guild system is a key step in determining the rise and fall of the medical school;On this basis,a sound internal management system is an indispensable key factor supporting the development of the university;In addition,whether there is a sufficiently rich subject structure is also a key choice that affects the development or demise of medical schools.
