Today’s Medical School of Shanghai Jiaotong University (formerly The Second Medical University) is made up of three different medical education styles:Medical School of St.John’s University represents the British-American style, while Aurora University’s Medical School stands for the French-style, and Tongde Medical School which was set up by Chinese. In addition, national medical school like Shanghai Medical School is also one typical kind of medical schools in Shanghai. At the same time there are different kinds of medical system in Shanghai International Settlement and French Concession, and finally fused together after the process of conflict.This thesis starts with the history of the Medical School of St.John’s University which is the medical education of British-American style in Modern Shanghai. St.Luker’s Hospital established in1866is the predecessor of the Medical School of St.John’s University, and was dissolved in1952. The second part of this thesis analyses a large amount of original archives and texts, and then shows a general idea of this medical school. The thesis also tries to put this medical school into the background of medical education in Europe and United States from a specific and novel perspective. The process of medical education in United States is the main clue of this part through which we can make clear the way this medical school transplant the British-American medical education style from foreign country. The third chapter mainly focus on the students’ curriculum and textbooks as well as their graduation destinations. It shows that doctors as free occupation populations are born and become more and more active in modern Shanghai. Doctors form their own social network have a direct impact on the construction of medical system at that time including physician certification system and the organization of the medical community.Medical School of St.John’s University also makes the transition skillfully from modern knowledge to modern subject and finally embodied in free occupation populations. These three key words indicate a noticeable trend of the urban development and transformation in modern Shanghai, and that’s the high academic and social value of this topic. The research of medical education and physicians as well as the construction of medical system are all important clues of this thesis.
