ObjectiveOsteoporosis(OP)is the most important metabolic bone disease in diabetic patients.Betatrophin,a newly identified secreted protein, has been recently found to be involved in glycolipid metabolism and was closely related to bone metabolism markers. Our study wants to investigate the relationship between bone mineral density(BMD)and betatrophin in patients with T2 DM.MethodsWe enrolled 95 patients with T2 DM.BMD of the lumbar vertebrae(L1-L4),femoral neck(FN),and total hip(TH)in all the patients were measured using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry.According to the BMD,the subjects were divided into normal bone mass group(n = 46)and abnormal bone mass group(including bone mass loss and osteoporosis,n = 49).Oral glucose tolerance test and insulin releasing test were conducted in all the patients.Serum betatrophin levels were determined with ELISA method.Results(1)Compared with the normal bone mass group, age, course of disease and serum creatinine in abnormal bone mass group were significantly elevated(P < 0.05).(2)Comparing to normal bone mass group, the levels of serum betatrophin in abnormal bone mass group was significantly elevated(P < 0.05).(3)Based on the correlation analysis, serum betatrophin levels were negatively correlated with the BMD of FN and TH(r =-0.238,r =-0.208,all P < 0.05).(4)Three subgroups were divided from low to high betatrophin levels. With increasing abnormal BMD rates(38.7%?53.1% and 62.5%).(5)Binary logistic regression analysis showed that serum betatrophin levels were significantly associated with abnormal BMD.Betatrophin was a risk factor of abnormal BMD.Conclusions(1)Our results indicate that the levels of serum betatrophin in abnormal bone mass group was significantly elevated.(2)The levels of serum betatrophin was negatively correlated with the BMD of FN and TH.The trend of abnormal BMD was more pronounced in the higher serum betatrophin tertile.(3)Serum betatrophin could be an indicator in the occurrence and development of osteoporosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
