Objective To explore the relationship between the years since menopause and metabolic syndrome(MS)and its components among middle-aged and elderly women. Methods The baseline data were “REACTION” study from Gansu Province, and 6205 women eligible residents aged 40-75 years old in Lanzhou community were selected,we extracted their information of questionnaire, physical examination and laboratory data such as four items of blood lipid, blood sugar and liver and kidney function.Research objects followed the 2005 NCEP-ATPIII standard in the Asia Pacific region to statistics the prevalence of MS and its components.According to the menopausal status, the total population was divided into premenopausal women group and postmenopausal women group.According to the years since menopause, postmenopausal women were divided into ~5 years,~10 years,~15 years,≥15 years group. The partial correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the years since menopause and MS diagnostic components. The relationship between different groups of years since menopause and MS and its components used the binary logistic regression analysis to explore.Results(1)Among the 6205 subjects,1376(22.2%)were premenopausal women and 4829(77.8%)were postmenopausal women;the prevalence of MS was 51.2%,and the prevalence of MS in postmenopausal women was higher than that in premenopausal women(57.1% vs 30.5%,P<0.05).(2)The proportion of premenopausal women, the years since menopause of ~5 years,~ 10 years,~ 15 years,≥ 15 years were 1376(22.2%),1075(17.3%),1255(20.2%),989(15.9%),1510(24.3%)respectively.The prevalence of MS in each group gradually increased, which were 30.5%,42.5%,50.6%,62.2%,69.5%,respectively(P<0.05).(3)Compared with non-MS group,MS group had a longer years since menopause(12.56 vs 9.37 years,P<0.05).With the components of MS increased, the years since menopause increased.(4)The partial correlation analysis showed that after adjusting for a variety of confounding factors, there was no correlation between the years since menopause and WC,SBP,DBP,FPG,2hPG,HbA1 c,TC,TG,LDL-C,and HDL-C levels(P>0.05).(5)Logistic regression analysis showed that a variety of confounding factors was adjusted, compared with premenopausal women, the years since menopause of ~5 years,~10 years,~15 years,≥15 years were positively associated with MS risk(OR=1.379,1.638,2.181,2.123,P<0.05);the years since menopause were positively associated with hypertriglyceridemia risk(OR=1.550,1.758,1.895,1.672,P<0.05);the years since menopause of ~10 years,~15 years,≥15 years were positively associated with hyperglycemia risk(OR=1.353,1.494,1.375,P<0.05).Conclusion The prevalence of MS in postmenopausal women in Lanzhou is significantly higher than that in premenopausal women;the increase of the years since menopause may be an independent risk factor for MS and its components hypertriglyceridemia and hyperglycemia.
