Objective:The health education was given for male residents in Xining City,Qinghai Province. The difference among different groups in willingness and undertake of MC surgery were observed to show whether health education increased rate of MC surgery uptake. Methods:Male residents aged 18-49 were investigated by a questionnaire survey in Xining City,Qinghai Province, and their age, marital status and other relevant information were recorded.Male residents who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into three groups: O,A,and B;Both groups A and B were educated in 1 month by the printed materials including the scientific context of MC,AIDS prevention, sexual health and so forth, when group O just collected general information without any intervention;Group B was educated in 1 month after receiving the first intervention with expert audio-visual materials,on-site guidance from urology specialists at the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University, and the surgical experience shared by volunteers who had undergone circumcision. The follow-up period was 9 months.SPSS19.0 statistical software was used to analyze the relevant data. The measurement data were statistically analyzed by t-test,which were expressed by mean plus or minus the standard deviation((?)ąS).The counting data were statistically analyzed by chi-square test. All the criteria with statistical significance were P <0.05.Results:The rate of willingness to accept MC after intervention:group O decreased from 7.6%(24/314)to 5.1%(14/272),group A increased from 7.5%(26/343)to 13.8%(41/298),group B consisted of 6.0%(21/348)rose to 11.1%(33/297).While residents in group O not underwent the surgery during the follow-up time, rate of MC surgery uptake was increased in group A(1.5%;5/343)and group B(1.1%:4/348).Cox regression model analysis showed that the group A was the most effective method for improving residents' willingness to accept MC.being approximately three times as effective as group O(RR=3.008,95%CI,1.837-4.926,P <0.001).Group B was twice as large as group O(RR=2.238,95%CI,1.336-3.750,P =0.002),and there was no significant difference compared with group A(P=0.328).Willingness to accept MC increased after free operation in all three groups(P <0.05).Before the intervention, the percentages of all ethnic groups that had undergone MC were:12.7%(104/816)for Han,64.4%(85/132)for Hui,8.5%(16/189)for Tibetans and the other 14.1%(12/85).Conclusions:1.Health education promoted male residents to accept MC.2.Primary education was the most effective method to facilitate residents to accept MC.3.The high cost of surgery was one of the reasons why male residents failed to accept MC.4.The surgery rate of Hui nationality was different to the Han nationality,Tibetan nationality and other nationalities, while there was no significant difference between the Han nationality and the Tibetan nationality.
